The newly developed Potter reopened its doors in May 2025 with the landmark exhibition 65,000 Years: A Short History of Australian Art. The exhibition was curated by esteemed Laureate Professor Marcia Langton AO, Senior Curator Judith Ryan AM and Associate Curator Shanysa McConville in consultation with Indigenous custodians and examined the rise to prominence of Indigenous art in Australia and proclaimed the importance of Indigenous knowledge and agency.
The Potter will continue to deliver an ambitious program of exhibitions, with a diverse range of artists and collections exploring the big issues and major concerns of our times. It will have a key focus on artist commissions and acquisitions from Australian and international artists.
We invite you to support this significant exhibition program by making an annual donation online.
Annual Appeal
Be a part of bringing together nearly 100 years of Yolngu culture and strengthen the University’s capacity to preserve, research, and share this important material for future generations.
The Rumbal barks are a collection of twenty-four paintings created by contemporary Yolŋu artists in response to works painted by their ancestors. The paintings and those held in the Donald Thomson Collection, demonstrate an enduring connection. Our aim is to acquire the Rumbal barks into the University of Melbourne’s collection, uniting them with the Donald Thomson Collection to complete a Parliament of Yolŋu Rom (law) and an untied voice through Gurrutu (kinship).
