The Potter will deliver an ambitious program of exhibitions, with a diverse range of artists and collections exploring the big issues and major concerns of our times. This exciting program will launch with 65,000 Years: A Short History of Australian Art, curated by esteemed Indigenous scholar Associate Provost Professor Marcia Langton AO, Senior Curator Judith RyanAM and Associate Curator Shanysa McConville in consultation with Indigenous custodians. 65,000 Years examines the rise to prominence of Indigenous art in Australia and proclaims the importance of Indigenous knowledge and agency.

The exhibition will present over 400 works—many rarely seen in public—including a series of important new commissions. It will cross time periods, art forms and techniques, regions and language groups, to foreground Indigenous perspectives and demonstrate the unique continuity of Indigenous art and culture.

In subsequent programming, the Potter will explore themes such as:

  • Other-than-human forms of intelligence
  • Technologies of weaving and fibre arts
  • Culture, economics and politics of the eucalypt
  • Environment and sustainability in the Pacific region
