The Art of Central and Western Desert
Join Shanysa McConville, curator of 65,000 Years: A Short History of Australian Art, in the Central and Western Desert gallery to explore the stories of First Peoples’ art from Central Australia. The works in this gallery highlight the diversity of art from the region, spanning Albert Namatjira’s watercolours and the Papunya Tula movement of the 1970s through to a new commission by leading women artists Betty Muffler and Maringka Burton. For Shanysa, the works in this gallery demonstrate that First Peoples’ practice can take any form, in any colour or medium, with no limits on what has been created in the past or imagined for the future.
