Professional Placements

Gain hands-on experience in the arts and cultural sector

The Potter regularly offers professional placements and internships in collaboration with our colleagues across our Museums and Collections department. Placements are advertised on subject portals and student noticeboards in collaboration with faculty subject coordinators when available. We also accept enquiries from current University of Melbourne students enrolled in professional placement and internship subjects in related fields.

Past internships

Potter head curator Samantha Comte worked closely with our interns Yi Li, Isabella Chwasta and Karl Sagrabb from the Faculty of Arts, to develop the project 21 x 10: Ten inspiring artworks to spark conversation. This 2021 program invited audiences to share ideas, ask questions, challenge historical narratives, and to imagine new futures. Bringing new voices and perspectives to the University of Melbourne Art Collection 21 x 10 explored critical questions such as – Who owns history? What role can art play in addressing climate change? What do gaps in the University’s art collection reveal?

There were lots of communications involved in the process with stakeholders like designers, curators and also installers. I would highly recommend doing the internship placement just because you don't get those skills when you're in class and it also helps using those theoretical skills you learn in the course in something a bit more practical.
