William Strutt
Bushrangers, Victoria, Australia 1852, 1887
William Strutt was one of the most highly trained and accomplished artists working in Melbourne in the 1850s and 1860s. During his twelve years here, he witnessed a community and countryside transformed by the gold rush; his numerous sketches, illustrations and paintings provide important visual documentation of contemporary colonial society. Yet his ambition, to paint grand paintings of historical events, did not eventuate until after his return to England in 1862.
