Vivienne Binns
Lino, Canberra, tile formation and overlay, 2001
Lino, Canberra Tile Formation and Overlay is a work from the series In Memory of the Unknown Artist. In this series, Vivienne Binns acknowledges the anonymous artists who have designed the everyday objects that we use in our lives.
The patchwork of linoleum fragments that make up this work have been salvaged by the artist from old Canberra houses and then reassembled into a work that is both abstract and representational. The work, like the different patterns in the found linoleum, suggests a variety of visual languages from a diverse range of cultural sources. There is a suggestion of the landscape, its format and the subtle graduation from land to sky, while the highly organised pattern and colour recalls ornament in Islamic art, traditional women’s craft and geometric abstract painting. The work is both a symbol of the physical and cultural landscape of Canberra, as well as a mix of modernist art and industrial design.
