Vivienne Shark LeWitt
‘If the shoe doesn’t fit, must we change the foot?’, 2008
Vivienne Shark LeWitt’s meticulous figurative compositions are painted in a restrained style that is the perfect vehicle for her satirical subjects. The references in the works are derived from popular culture, religious and mythological iconography, modern literature and art theory, but they are always portrayed in personal terms. LeWitt’s genius is her intuitive understanding of the human psyche: we recognise ourselves in these pictures and empathise with her portrayal of humanity. At the same time, the pictures are satirical comments; spaces in which social norms we usually take for granted appear both peculiar and arbitrary.
