Carole Wilson
There’s more to life than four walls, 1989
In 2017 Dr Carole Wilson made a significant gift of 40 works from two influential Melbourne based printmaking collectives - Jillposters and Another Planet. Providing an important perspective on social and political concerns in the 1980s and 90s in Melbourne, Jillposters had a strong focus on women’s issues, both in Australia and overseas, while Another Planet produced powerful works that responded to nuclear testing, shifting social norms, growing awareness of the environment, immigration and economic and social rights. The Jillposter collective had strong links to the University of Melbourne, with some of the works being produced in the student union printmaking room in the 1980s.
At the core of these organisations was collaboration, through access to facilities and a supportive learning environment. The workshops undertook special projects, directly working with communities to represent their concerns. They also provided a platform for members to create in-house posters, supporting artistic experimentation and collaboration. Adaptive and flexible, these organisations overcame many obstacles to maintain their core foundations and produced timely and significant work
